Concorde

Concorde

Built by Gabriel between 1755 and 1775, it is octagonal in shape. With its Egyptian obelisk in the centre, its statues and its majestic dimensions, the Concorde is one of the most beautiful squares in Paris. Don't miss the magnificent views it affords of the triumphal route trough the Arc de Triomphe, the Défense and also the Louvre.
There are eight statues representing the eight major cities of France; Brest and Rouen (in the northwest), Lille and Strasbourg (to the northeast) Lyon and Marseille (on the Quai des Tuileries) and Bordeaux and Nantes (in the southwest).
It was the scene of a number of key historical events with more than 1300 people beheaded within its boundaries. They included Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, Danton and the architect of The Terror Robespierre himself.
