    La Victoire de Samothrace: rediscover a masterpiece at the Louvre Museum

    The outstanding silhouette of the La Victoire de Samothrace (Samothrace Victory) has regained its centrality to the Louvre Museum after over a year of restoration. From March, 5 to June 15, 2015 the Louvre Museum is holding an exhibition that recalls the discoveries and secrets revealed during the restoration process of this masterpiece.

    According to the legend, the monument of the Samothrace Victory, consisting of a winged goddess statue - the messenger of Victory - and a prow-shaped base resting on a low pedestal, was offered to the Winged Gods following a naval victory. It was discovered in 1863 by Charles Champoiseau in the sanctuary of the island of Samothrace north of the Aegean Sea.

    The exhibition begins with a retrospective to its place of origin, the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace. From 1863 to today, the succession of different excavation campaigns, French, Austrian and US, including some of the findings are presented in the exhibition, shows the slow road specialists to come to understand the complexity of the process of creating the monument. Old photographs and casts it possible to follow the main stages of its restoration and its presentation at the Louvre in 1866, 1883 and 1934.

    It will also return to the recent restoration conducted from September 2013 TO July 2014 and allowed to make its beauty to a major work of the Parisian collections. You can also view various information highlighted during the restoration, such as design and decor around La Samothrace.
